So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. He was a very clever man and a gentleman besides. I vividly remember playing squash against him prior to the QUB Mech Eng Christmas party. I was a brash PhD student, confident that I could overwhelm Ed, who was more than 10 years older than me. He calmly worked out my weaknesses and eventually beat me! This meant the staff had beaten the research students, so Ed was the hero of the day. Years later I returned to QUB as a member of staff and Ed was a delightful colleague to work with. He made huge contributions to engineering at QUB and to the education of generations of students and researchers.
